Study Permit
1) Study Permit (Application and Renewal)
a) Apply for a study permit: For anyone who wants to study in Canada for a continued duration of over 6 months, has to apply for a study permit. A study permit is a document that allows to study in any Designated Learning Institute in Canada.

- Pre-school
- Distance Learning
- Courses of general interest or self improvement
- Audited courses
c) Who is exempt from getting a study permit?
- If you are a minor child (under the age of 18) and who is already within Canada [A30(2)]
- If you are a member of a foreign representative authorized by Global Affairs who is physically present in Canada as a diplomatic agent or an official representative of a country other than Canada, you will not require a study permit [R188(1)(a)]
- If you are a member of armed forces of country under the Visiting Forces Act[R188(1)(b)]. This will also include the person who is defined as a civilian component of visiting force
- If you are enrolled in a course that is shorter than 6 months in duration. The program could be part-time or full-time as per the requirements of the school/college. [R188(1)(c)]
- If you are someone who is either registered Indian or is entitled to be registered to be defined under the Indian Act [R188(1)(d)]
d) Things you need to qualify to get a study permit:
- A Letter of Acceptance from the Designated Learning Institute (DLI)
- Meet the criteria of minimum fund requirement
- Ensure that you are not inadmissible to Canada in terms of medical or criminality
- A Police Clearance Certificate and Medical Certificate could be required
- If you are a minor child (under the age of 18) and who is already within Canada [A30(2)]

e) Step by Step process to apply for a study permit
Note: The study permit is not a visa. The individual will require to have a visitor visa/ ETA stamped to their passport to be able to gain entry to Canada. If the application for the study permit has been submitted from outside Canada, you will automatically get the visa stamped for the first time as well.
Student Direct Stream:
- Collect all the required documents (A Letter of explanation stating your purpose of studying in Canada, valid passport, proof of funds (GIC, tuition fee paid, bank statements), letter of acceptance.
- Ensure to have the right document checklist for the right kind of permit application.
- Create the IRCC account
- Fill the required forms and attach all the required documents (language test, medical exams, police certificate. Bank statements, SOP)
- Pay the required fee (application fee and biometrics)
- Once the study permit is approved, you will be sent a passport request. Submit your passport to the closest VAC in your area along with the other documents asked in that specified email.
The citizens of certain countries are eligible for the faster processing of their Study Permit Application. Most of the application are processed within 20 calendar days as per the IRCC but the processing time could sometimes take longer as well.
A) Who is eligible to apply under this category:
If you are a legal resident of one of the under-mentioned countries:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Brazil
- China
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- India
- Morocco
- Pakistan
- Peru
- Philippines
- Senegal
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Vietnam
- If you have a letter of acceptance from a post secondary DLI
- If you have proof paying your tuition for the full first year of your education
- If you are physically present outside of Canada
- If you have a GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) of CAD 10,000
- If you have a medical exam done before the application of the visa
- If you are able to get a Police Clearance Certification before the application.
- IF you have a language test result (IELTS Academic or General) and have a score of 6.0 or higher in each module (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking or TEF (Test d’evaluation de francais) a score of CLB 7 in each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
- If you have a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) (This is applicable only if you plan to study in Quebec).
Note: If you’re not a resident of one of the countries mentioned above, you will not be eligible to apply under the Student Direct Stream and you would have to apply your study permit under the regular Study Permit Application process.
Study Permit Extension:
Generally, the study permit will be stamped for an addition of 90 days to the duration of course. In certain scenarios, where you need more time to complete your education than what is stamped, you would require to submit an application for the study permit extension. The usual processing time for this process is 1-2 months, which sometimes varies as per the Immigration Policies and Procedures.
