Exploring Canada’s Immigration Pilot Programs for Skilled Workers

Pilot Programs: Due to some unavoidable factors like waning birth rates and early retirement, Canada is in dire need of skilled workers. Many skilled foreign workers prefer to move to urban provinces like British Columbia, Ontario, or Quebec. 1) Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program: This program was launched in June 2019 to strengthen smaller communities in rural areas. Employers in eligible communities can post job opportunities. If a skilled foreign worker is willing to live and work in these areas, they can apply for positions and potentially become permanent residents. For those applying for a work permit in Canada, this is a key option.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program: This program has now become a permanent program as of March 04, 2022 and is now known as Atlantic Immigration Program. Under this pathway, both the foreign skilled workers and international students within Canada are eligible to apply. The following four provinces are the participating provinces under this pilot program:
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Nova Scotia
  • Prince Edward Island
Agri-Food Immigration Pilot Program: This program was launched in march 2020 to create job opportunities for skilled farm and livestock workers who are wanting to immigrate to Canada and apply for their permanent residency. These jobs would be more around the meat processing, animal raising, green housing, mushroom products sectors etc. In order to be eligible under this category, one has to have a valid job offer in one of the approved occupations which has to be aligned with the work experience as well.
